DHAL – HOW TO MAKE SIMPLE SRI LANKAN DHAL RECIPE

Dhal Schotel is one of the typical Indian cuisine that tastes delicious. For those of you who want to enjoy the dhal Schotel cuisine there is no need to go all the way to India, because we will share the recipe to you.

To cook it only needed onions, green chili pepper and some spices such as pandan leaves, fenugreek, cumin, and cinnamon to be further mixed with coconut milk. The food itself is a curry with a thinner texture than the typical Indian curry. In addition, you will get a very delicious taste if you try to cook it using a traditional clay pot.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cups red lentils rinse before use
  • 1 onion diced
  • 6 garlic cloves grated
  • 4 green chilies sliced
  • large thumb of ginger grated
  • 4 large tomatoes diced
  • 3 tsp turmeric
  • 3 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tsp garam masala
  • handful of cilantro chopped
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • oil for frying

For serving:

  • poppadoms
  • chutney

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Pour the lentils and 6 cups of water in a saucepan on a medium heat, and cook for 30 minutes. Skim off the foam as it gathers at the top.

  2. Meanwhile, add a little oil to a frying pan and cook the onion for a few minutes. Then stir in the garlic, chili, ginger, and spices, and fry for a further 2 minutes or until the cumin seeds begin to crackle. Then add the tomatoes and fry for another 2 minutes.

  3. Once the lentils are done, transfer the onion mixture to the saucepan with the lentils and simmer for 10 minutes.

  4. Stir in the cilantro, salt and pepper.

  5. Serve with sprinkling of cilantro, poppadoms, and chutney.
